This week features differentiated gas, new satellites for measuring greenhouse gas plumes, drone-based methane monitoring in the north sea, new research on Canada’s upstream methane emissions, and new funding and technology testing opportunities.

EQT Corporation to Certify Majority of Natural Gas

A major U.S. natural gas producer, EQT Corporation, has announced plans to certify most of its gas through both Equitable Origin’s EO100 Standard for Responsible Energy Development and the MiQ Standard. EQT produced more than 4 million cubic feet of natural gas equivalent in 2019. Read the press release here.

California to Launch Methane Satellites through Carbon Mapper

The State of California plans to launch two satellites by 2023 that will monitor methane and carbon dioxide emissions. The project, dubbed Carbon Mapper, will leverage hyperspectral imaging spectrometers onboard satellites built by Planet, imaging plumes at 30 m resolution. Read more here and here.

Drone-based Methane Monitoring Takes off in North Sea

A growing and collaborative group of producers in the North Sea, including BP, Total, and Shell, are using drones by Flylogix and SeekOps to monitor for methane emissions. The drone-based solution promises improvements in cost, safety, and performance over alternatives. Read more here.

Forest Conservation Offsets Under Investigation

The Nature Conservancy is conducting an investigation on itself to determine whether millions of dollars of offset credits purchased by companies such as JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock are legitimate. The investigation follows criticisms that the environmental group is protecting forests that are not under threat of destruction and could signal a shift in carbon offset accountability. Research: Canada’s Upstream O&G Methane Emissions are Underestimated

A new study that compiled measurements from 6650 oil and gas facilities across western Canada found that measured emission rates are 1.5 times higher that Canada’s National Inventory Report. The research was led by Katlyn MacKay of St. Francis Xavier University and can be accessed here.

Funding: Alberta Upstream Petroleum Research Fund (AUPRF)

A new call for proposals has been announced by AUPRF for four projects that will explore:

Emissions quantification tools (click here),
Emissions estimation from tanks (click here),
Rate-based emission correlations (click here), and
Surface casing vent flows at inactive wells (click here).

The deadline for submission is May 16, 2021.

Opportunity: NGIF Launches Emissions Testing Centre

The Natural Gas Innovation Fund has announced a new Emissions Testing Centre that will allow testing of new emissions reduction technologies. Project partners include Tourmaline Oil Corp, Perpetual Energy Inc., University of Calgary Energy Centre, the Canadian Gas Association, and Natural Resources Canada’s Canadian Emissions Reduction Innovation Network (CERIN) initiative.
