Report: Solutions for Reducing O&G Methane

The Climate Group has released a report called “Reducing Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Operations, State and Regional Solutions”. The report draws on insights from the Under2 Coalition Methane Project, in which governments from various jurisdictions have come together to share experiences on tracking and reducing O&G methane emissions. Numerous key actions and learnings are provided by regulators. Read more and access the free report here.

Research: American Cities are Underreporting GHG Emissions

A new study suggests that US cities are underestimating their GHG emissions by an average of 20% – and in some cases, much more. Many municipalities are working to cut emissions but doing so will be difficult without an accurate understanding of baselines. Study authors point to an overreliance on bottom-up quantification, which is known to exclude and underestimate certain sources. A need exists for robust quantification standards. Read more about the study here.

Exxon Mobil Moves on Climate in Response to Shareholders

Last week, a coalition of over 135 shareholders managing $2+ trillion pressed Exxon Mobil to do more to address the climate crisis. This week, in an apparent response, Exxon has announced the formation of a new technology company focused on reducing GHG emissions. A major focus of the new business will be the advancement of carbon capture technologies. Read more here.

ONE Future Welcomes Spire

Spire, a major US natural gas producer, has joined ONE Future, and in doing so has committed to reduce methane emissions intensity to 1% of production or less by 2025. Spire has committed to being carbon neutral by 2050 and claims that their methane emissions have already fallen by ~40% since 2005. Read more here.

Saskatchewan Oil Incentives Fund Methane Reductions

The Government of Saskatchewan has announced that it will use funds from royalty credits to support three new projects that will reduce methane emissions and create jobs. The projects include a flare-gas-to-power project and a new gas fractionation plant, which will both allow producers to move away from flaring and venting in Saskatchewan. Read more here.

Government of Canada Publishes Methane Company Directory

The Government of Canada, in collaboration with the Petroleum Technology Alliance Canada, has published a guide and company directory describing Canadian capabilities in reducing methane emissions from the O&G sector. The guide provides details on Canada’s experience in addressing methane emissions and highlights leading companies working to tackle the methane challenge – including Highwood Emissions Management!
