This week’s Highwood Bulletin covers developments in global greenhouse gas emissions management for the oil and natural gas industry. Topics this week include new international methane reduction pledges by governments and industry coalitions, the launch of an exciting new differentiated gas initiative, a new report for investors on OGMP 2.0, conferences, funding, courses, and hiring!

United States and Europe Commit to Methane Reductions

In a major step towards fulfilling the Paris Climate Agreement, the United States and the European Union made a joint pledge to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030 based on 2020 levels. The pledge will be available to more signatories at Cop26, and other countries (including the UK) are already signaling their intention to participate. Read more here.

OGCI Coalition Announces Net Zero Target

The Oil and Gas Climate Initiative, a coalition of many of the world’s largest oil and gas companies, has raised the stakes in their ambition to reduce methane emissions. On September 20th, 2021, the group made a number of new commitments, including a net zero pledge and a plan to hit 0.2% methane intensity by 2025. Only Scope 1 and 2 emissions are included. ONE Future Hits 50 Members

Our Nation’s Energy Future (ONE Future) is a coalition of U.S. energy companies committed to reducing methane intensity to below 1% by 2025 across the entire natural gas supply chain (a target they have already achieved). On September 22, ONE Future hit a major milestone by welcoming their 50th member, DT Midstream. Congrats ONE Future! Read more here.

Gas Technology Institute Launches Veritas Differentiated Gas Initiative

Highwood is excited to be working with Gas Technology Institute to build Veritas. What is Veritas? A game-changing global standard that will revolutionize differentiated gas and the disclosure of methane emissions performance. Report: An Investor’s Guide to OGMP 2.0

The Oil and Gas Methane Partnership (OGMP) 2.0 is an ambitious reporting framework that is gearing up to change how methane emissions are measured, reported, and tracked for oil and gas companies around the world. This presents investors with opportunities to use better data and metrics to inform ESG investment decisions. The Environmental Defense Fund has published a guide to help the energy industry and investors understand and leverage OGMP 2.0. Download the guide here.

Ready for one of the best methane events of the year? This year Highwood Emissions Management is sponsoring CH4 Connections, hosted in Fort Collins by our friends at Gas Technology Institute (GTI). Also, don’t miss out on a presentation by Highwood’s Thomas Fox, who will be speaking on a panel called “The Role of Methane Accounting in a Low Carbon World”. Register here and see you in Colorado.

Scope 1, 2, and 3 Emissions Courses Return

Two emissions management courses are back by popular demand. Join instructor Jessica Shumlich (Highwood’s CEO) as she shares her extensive knowledge on Scope 1 emissions (register here). If you’re already familiar with the basics, you can take her Scope 2 and 3 emissions course by registering here. These courses are offered in partnership with our friends at JWN Energy.

Conference Recap: EPA Methane Detection Technologies

On August 24th, 2021, The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) held a 2-day workshop on methane detection technologies in advance of their highly anticipated updated methane rules. Participation in the workshop was unprecedented in the O&G methane sphere, with 1000 registrations. If you missed any of it, including Highwood’s presentation on demonstrating equivalency with open-source model LDAR-Sim, you can watch everything on YouTube. Click here to begin.
