Backed by a growing team of engineers, scientists, and consultants—see life at Highwood.

Jessica Shumlich, P.Eng., MM

Chief Executive Officer, Co-Founder

Jessica shapes Highwood’s growth strategy and mission to make accurate methane inventories a competitive edge for oil & gas producers.

An Alberta-licensed engineer with over 15 years in emissions strategy, she has guided multinationals and start-ups through technology deployment, policy alignment, and market positioning—work credited with reducing millions of tonnes of CO₂e.

Her engineering discipline and business training (Master of Management, UBC) underpin Highwood’s customer-first culture. Jessica’s domain expertise spans OGMP 2.0, EUMR, MiQ, and carbon-market economics, and she is a sought-after speaker on methane risk and energy transition.

A champion of vibrant communities, she volunteers with Green Calgary and Bike Calgary and recharges by hiking the Rockies with family and friends.

Thomas Fox, PhD

President & Chief Innovation Officer, Co-Founder

Thomas Fox is an internationally recognized expert in methane emissions management and the driving force behind Highwood’s digital solutions, innovation efforts, and technical vision. As co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer, he has helped grow Highwood into a leading provider of emissions intelligence, serving more than 100 clients, including supermajors, industry associations, regulators, and non-profits across global oil and gas markets.

Thomas holds a PhD from the University of Calgary, where he specialized in methane detection and quantification technology evaluation as a Vanier Scholar and developed LDAR-Sim, the open-source simulation platform now used globally to optimize methane technology deployment. Over the past decade, he has contributed to major policy frameworks including US and Canadian regulations, MiQ, Veritas, and ISO Standards, and has led dozens of high-profile methane projects with clients around the world.

Thomas is a frequent speaker at international conferences and a trusted advisor to energy companies, regulators, and technology developers navigating the evolving emissions landscape. His work combines deep technical knowledge with a focus on clarity, defensibility, and practical implementation.

Jeff Rutherford, PhD

Head of Research & Development

Jeff keeps Highwood at the forefront of methane science, translating cutting-edge research into software and consulting tools that help operators build measurement-informed inventories and meet OGMP 2.0 expectations.

At Stanford University he earned a PhD in Energy Resources Engineering, co-leading the largest single-blind controlled-release trials of airborne and satellite methane sensors and publishing bottom-up inventory simulations now cited in U.S. EPA rule-making. Jeff also advanced the open-source Oil Production Greenhouse-Gas Estimator (OPGEE) in support of California’s Low-Carbon Fuel Standard and emissions-reduction programs at companies such as Saudi Aramco and Chevron.

An engineer by training (BSc Mechanical Engineering, University of Alberta; MS Oceanography, LSU), he bridges rigorous modeling with practical field insight—ensuring Highwood’s platform and services remain scientifically defensible and regulator-ready. Jeff shares his work at international conferences and volunteers to promote science education and environmental stewardship.

Ian Percival

Head of Software

Ian leads the engineering team that builds and scales Highwood’s Emissions Intelligence Platform, turning complex methane workflows into fast, reliable, and secure software for global operators.

Before joining Highwood, he directed software engineering at Neo Financial, where he guided multiple agile squads, and was part of the early and rapid growth that took Neo to Unicorn status in under 3 years. Earlier roles as team lead at Field Safe Solutions and Venture Communications sharpened his ability to turn field-safety and geospatial data into robust SaaS products.

With 20 years of full-stack experience in Python, PHP, and distributed databases, Ian specialises in high-availability architecture, rapid iteration, and developer-experience culture. He supports initiatives in science & technology education, animal welfare, and environmental stewardship.

Adrian Harding

Head of Product

Adrian leads product strategy at Highwood, helping teams hypothesize, test, and launch features that turn methane data into measurable customer value.

He brings more than a decade of product-development leadership.  While at Trimble, where he helped grow various B2B products serving the logistics industry.  Adrian held a variety of roles from GIS product manager to Vice President of Fleet Mobility Solutions, gathering experience in product team leadership, pricing & packaging, subscription transitions, and data-driven growth across North America. Earlier roles in oil & gas geospatial data, and business strategy sharpened his ability to connect market pain with high-impact roadmaps.

Known for outcome-oriented planning and pragmatic discovery, Adrian excels at building cross-functional “muscle” that ships, learns, and iterates fast. When not working at Highwood Adrian is an active community volunteer with Scouts Canada.

Stanley Opara, MBA

Head of Growth

Stanley drives go-to-market strategy, enterprise sales, and partnerships worldwide, blending technical depth with commercial instinct.

He began as an exploration geophysicist at Schlumberger, where high-fidelity subsurface analytics informed multimillion-dollar drilling decisions. At Deloitte, he helped energy clients solve complex operational challenges before building Suncor’s internal carbon-market strategy team, guiding executives toward net-zero compliance. He then joined GHGSat, bringing satellite-based methane monitoring to market and expanding global adoption.

Holding a BTech in Geophysics and an MBA from Ivey Business School, he excels at translating complex technical value into customer-focused narratives. Stanley mentors cleantech founders and finds balance through photography and podcasting.

George McTaggart, MBA

Head of Marketing

George drives Highwood’s marketing strategy and demand generation, drawing on 35 years of scaling B2B tech companies from early traction to growth investment.

A seasoned fractional CMO, he works shoulder-to-shoulder with founders to sharpen positioning, compress sales cycles, and stand-up marketing engines that deliver results without full-time overhead.

George pairs a geologist’s scientific literacy (BSc Geology, Queen’s University) with an MBA (Ivey School of Business at Western University) and a career spanning software, cybersecurity, and geospatial analytics—experience that gives him a rare cross-functional view of climate-tech marketing. Known for his AI-forward approach, he equips lean teams with automation and data intelligence to move faster and achieve more with less.

Outside the office, George mentors cleantech startups and recharges on the ski trails, tennis courts and golf courses near Ottawa.
