Your Mission

As the Controller your mission is to provide accounting and FP&A support to the Highwood Team. Your duties will include:

  • Managing the AR collections process to maintain outstanding receivables at a healthy level
  • Own the AP invoices initiative, including processing vendor invoices with appropriate approvals and communicating with suppliers on an as needed basis
  • Process employee expense reimbursements in a timely and accurate manner
  • Implement transfer pricing strategy and monthly intercompany activity
  • Maintain trial balance in accordance with GAAP
  • Generate month-end balance sheet reconciliations and close process to ensure accurate and timely reporting of financial information. Record all req
  • Analyze the monthly P&L activity to ensure accuracy of financial data
  • Prepare monthly financial statements including consolidated P&L, Balance Sheet and Cash Flows, prepare various internal reports, including but not limited to analysis on budget to actual variances, detailed revenue analysis and profitability analysis, and cash flow management
  • Lead the annual budgeting and planning process to maintain a 3-5 year financial forecast model. Monitor progress and initiate quarterly reforecasting process to capture changes as determined through collaboration with senior leadership
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements, financial analysis and key metrics presentations and delivery to strategic leadership and the Highwood Emissions Board of Directors
  • Track cap table and employee stock options, updating for all investment activity and stock issuances
  • Liaise with external auditors and run the annual financial audit
  • Liase with external tax accountants on accurate and timely tax filings with tall Canada and US government agencies
  • Prepare financial reports and applications required for government grant and subsidy filings and track on an ongoing basis
  • Create and maintain all financial policy and process documentation

About You

Here are some of the things we’re looking for. Note that we don’t expect you to have all these qualifications, experiences and/or skills. We often choose to train someone with the right attitude over hiring the wrong person with the right skills.

  • 3+ years as head
  • Experience with and desire to roll up your sleeves and be hands on, performing all daily and monthly bookkeeping tasks, the monthly close and all the way to financial reporting and FP&A
  • CPA designation preferred
  • Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Comfort with understanding Canada and US financial regulations and tax laws
  • Thrive in a fast-paced start-up environment
  • Ability to take ownership of and complete projects that have little to no precedent
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and leadership skills across functions, being able to explain complicated financial topics simply and clearly
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to effectively present information at the board level
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
