Around the World, Leaders Commit to Slash GHG Emissions

New promises to reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions were announced by countries around the world, including the United States, Japan, Canada, the European Union, and the United Kingdom. In particular:

  • In a marked shift from the previous administration, United States President Joe Biden Committed to halving U.S. GHG Emissions by 2030. Click here to read more.

  • Justin Trudeau claims that Canada will “blow past” Paris targets previous set in 2015. Trudeau announced new, strengthened targets that will slash emissions by 40% by 2030. Click here to read more.

  • In Britain, new laws will mandate reduction of carbon emissions by 78% by 2035, representing a significant shift from previous commitments. Click here to read more.

Salesforce and Apple Call for Mandatory Auditable Emissions Disclosure

Salesforce joins a growing number of companies (including Apple last week) in demanding mandatory disclosure of greenhouse gas emissions and goals in the United States. They are calling for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission to require disclosure of Scopes 1, 2, & 3 emissions. Read more here.

Exxon Announces Massive Carbon Capture Project

ExxonMobil is proposing a $100 billion carbon capture project that it claims will store 100 million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year beneath the Gulf of Mexico (How Much Gas is That?!) The project requires public financing and would not be fully operational until 2040. Read more here.

Canada Launches Steering Committee for Hydrogen Strategy

A new committee has been announced that will establish priorities, guide actions, share knowledge and track results to deliver on recommendations outlined in Canada’s Hydrogen Strategy. Read more here.

Research: Immediate Application of Available Methane Technologies is Needed

A new study by a team of U.S. researchers analyzes the value of immediately implementing available methane reduction technologies compared to delayed timelines. Results show that acting now with available technologies could slow global warming by 30%. Read the study here.
